Because the exposure had to last from at least 15 seconds up to one minute to stop the ghost appearance movement smudge, it was impossible to hold a smile, especially as a group, so it was glum or nothing, esp young children. Long ago I visited a studio that started back in 1867 and is still going from the same premises, with an old huge workshop, backdrops and cellars full of glass plate negatives, and are still able to use some of the old equipment. It even smelt like 1867. During the second world war many glass plates were used to build greenhouses.
