I've always had these in and around my house in LA. Had one BW with a body the nearly the size of a quarter and legs about an inch long living in my garage. I hated killing it but the ex-wife insisted. It took a while to finally get her since everytime she relized there was a light on or even a flashlight near she retreated into her den.
Last year I turned around in my kitchen to find a BW scurrying across the floor. That was a bit startling since I have never seen one out of its web. She got picked up and moved outdoors.
If you're in Cali expect to have BWs on your property.
