Twenty years ago I can remember smoker friends of mine complaining about having to pay $7 a pack. Since then the tax on cigs has slowly, incrementally, gone way way up. Not because "Canada taxes everything to death" like you're probably thinking, it's that Canada sees this particular product as being bad for your health and bad for putting a long-term strain on the health care system, thus costing all Canadians.
So now if you (the broad, general 'you') want to smoke you're going to pay massively.
@ ********** -- Re: vaping --- yes, people here are moving towards that more and more. It won't be taxed like cigs, BUT... the no-smoking laws in existence are going to apply to vaping as well, at least here in Manitoba. IE; no smoking/vaping in public places, bars, restaurants, etc.
