I have adblock plus on my old slow laptop which can barely navigate a modern page if I let all the ads remain.
On sites that detect it, they usually just ask you to please disable it. Homebrewtalk forum site replaces it's banners (usually in a rotation scheme) with images of sad old ladies and puppies with words like "please disable adblock plus on this domain". It's kind of funny so I disabled it because they are mild and not flash-heavy compared to most modern sites.
On YouTube, all of the in-video and banner ads are completely blocked NP.
It's a well behaved add-on in my experience so just grab it and turn it on and off at will to see the differences.
