It's not about education.
This is a combination of a mental health crisis and the fact that we hand out firearms to anyone who wants them. It's easier to get a firearm than it is to get a driver's license, and we'll let anyone drive a car.
A perfect example of this is my friend John. He's fifty years old, mentally retarded, and operates on the level of a 16 year old. His is disabled from both the Army and the US Post Office. He owns a house, drives a car, and operates as a full adult. And he seems perfectly normal until you talk to him for more than ten minutes - then you quickly discover there is only a handful of topics he can talk about. He hasn't gotten laid in twenty years, he hasn't seen his kids in years and they don't talk to him (they are German and in Germany), he is over weight, has diabetes, high blood pressure, and a list of other health issues. Although he is a nice guy, he is pissed at the world and plans on leaving the state because "Obama is going to take his guns". Yet no one can stop him from buying firearms including assault rifles. It's only a matter of time before he snaps and there is nothing anyone can do to prevent this because he is protected by the 2nd amendment.
At the same time the gun owners will say "But I need my firearms to protect myself". Very true. By making firearms so easy to get we've armed the criminals and the mentally ill and now we'll need to protect ourselves from them. At the same time when we need someone with a firearm they aren't there. They weren't there in the church and they weren't at the block party where ten people got shot just the other day. Or if they are there they are unable to do anything because they aren't trained, like that guy in Wal Mart in Vegas who couldn't hit the side of the barn and got shot dead when he confronted two gunmen or the local homeowner here in town who pulled out his shotgun during a home invasion and promptly got beat nearly to death with his own weapon.
No worries. We'll just continue to bury our heads in the sand and do nothing.
