I would argue that 15 years ago most people were only aware of racism in their local area or when there was some kind of major event that made the news.

Now you can't get on Facebook (or GFY for that matter) without there being some debate about race.

Social media and technology might be helping to create the divide and maybe even worsen it now, but it has been bad in this country for a long time, it was just mostly kept a lot quieter until recently.
