I can't speak for all women, but I personally say it because 1. Most 36-year-old women I know (outside of California) look much older than I do and 2. Most people I meet are tongue-tied for at least 5 seconds after I mention my age, or something that gives away my age.

Geography is a bitch though... I definitely look my age when I visit Los Angeles.
