culturally the south and the north are vastly different, the north was settled by Saxons or Protestants from northern England, while the south for the most part was settled by Celts from south and western England and of course both north and south had many settles from Europe etc as well ....

I guess the flag symbolizes the difference in cultures more so than anything else.
