CAN-SPAM aside I was emailed an excel document that said I was a-ok to blast away.
This whole scenario is just so unusual and the tools will speculate to high heaven about certain aspects of it, no harm no foul was done.
Anyway I'll leave it at that, entertainment and a great story to tell... might even get me laid a couple times!

I'm pretty sure it is the user who has to opt in. Otherwise, Google and Yahoo would be selling access to users inboxes (ads around email, aside, as it's not the same).
I also wouldn't trust a random University employee to understand the intricacies of the law. Did they include their lawyers opinion memoranda with the excel spreadsheet? Oh, that's right, they don't care if you break the law because they're just acting as a data broker.
