I've often wondered about that. Back in the day they seemed to cure major diseases with a bunsen burner, a few beakers and grainy microscopes...without the advantage of hundreds of millions of dollars, thousands of researchers - and advanced technology.

Granted, cancer is relatively more complex to solve and there's many facets to it.
