The north fought the south in order to force the south back into the union and to control them. union troops would not of marched on the slave holding states over slavery had they not left the union. Slavery, would have continued on for a very long time if there was no break in the union at that time.

this is a subtle point. the op myth claims the war was not fought over slavery because the North was fighting to keep the Union intact. that's misleading. a war is fought by 2 sides. it is most certainly true that's why the North DEFENDED the union against the OFFENSIVE attack by the South. the South, by their own accounts, words, deeds and documents, were fighting to protect their economic system of slavery.
