His track record in the US Navy is dubious at best. He was involved in the USS Forrestal incident, and considering his father was an admiral in the Navy he had no major accomplishments. His only claim to fame is being shot down and then getting captured, both of which indicate he failed at being a good pilot. While being a POW he attempted to commit suicide and then made a full "anti American confession". He then returned home, cheated on his wife for a ten year period, eventually meeting and dating Cindy Lou Hensley in 1979 before leaving his wife in 1980.
