and you very well may be right. it's all in the odds. astronomical odds. the odds of life happening are astronomical in their own right, combined with that, life evolving into technology producing civilization is truly astronomically rare. at the same time, the universe is astronomically massive which allows for greater opportunity. and the other thing to consider is coincidence. perhaps a tech producing civilization has already come and gone in the 14 billion years of the universe. perhaps they are currently evolving yet are a few million years off from us, a tiny fragment of time really. also considering the timeline, a tech producing civilization would also have a statistically high chance of being wiped out by a natural disaster prior to sorting out inter-stellar travel/etc., just like we are.

for me, all of those combined strongly suggest we are the only tech producing civilization, in at the very least, the visible universe at this time.
