Win8 got a bad name because it too forward thinking. The folks at Microsoft could see that "apps" would replace programs, and went in that direction. The vast majority of people do not need a desk top - they need a handful of apps to check their email and facebook and play a few games and read books.
Win8 on a laptop sucked. Win8 on a Microsoft Surface was great.

Windows 10 really blows every other version of Windows out of the water, it's that damn good - just make sure you at least perform the upgrade within a year (the free upgrade licenses are tied to your hardware via a unique ID) so you get your free copy and then you could always move back to Windows 8 if you want.
