In 1981, I worked at the campus radio station at UNC-Chapel Hill. I was given tickets to check out this really cool band. That night it was raining buckets, but I decided to go anyway. As I got out of the car, the wind ripped the umbrella to pieces! I was drenched as I went into the club. The only people there were the band, the bartender and the soundman who was also taking money at the door. I stayed for about 4 songs and on top of being soaking wet and cold, the singer was terrible! He was just mumbling and looking down at the floor like a farmer looking down at a dead cow.
Yes, it was REM.
They did get better though!
