There is nothing elitist about it. The cost that you pay at the pump for gas is more than what you actually pay. (Damage to environment, clean-up, health, etc). A Tax that went towards cleaning it up sounds like a good idea to me.

To answer your ridiculous comment, not all electricity is produced by fossil fuels. Lot of it, and more and more every day, is coming from clean / renewable sources. Or did you already forget about the solar panels you installed on your roof?

I would LOVE to see EV cars taxed to fund things like this:

I would happily pay that tax.
