Just for the record, I don't interpret his comment as insulting a 'whole bunch of people', he was specifically talking about that one idiot. In using your own analogy, it would be tantamount to saying 'hey don't be insulting all fat people for just one fat idiot'. It's a failed argument.
And there is no 'deflect' trick; it's a reference to hypocrisy. If you're going to champion race relations then start in your own backyard.
