Start with one niche that you already know something about and then really kill it for about six months, I mean daily work. Promoting products with recurring income is preferable. Stay away from over sold niches such as IM.
Don't start with Amazon, start with something that will provide you with larger commissions as this will help keep you motivated.
Do your keyword research, explore what your competitors are doing and make sure you're better than them. There are plenty of tools available to help you analyse this stuff.
