I'd say the RR, is very skeptical of Trump and likely doesn't approve of his constant bashing of people, so they are going for the next best guy. Outside of the Relgious pandering Carson seems intelligent and well spoken.. So he will be the Relgious Right's boy..
Trump is the angry white person's boy.. It's easy to see the split in the types of people who support Trump vs Carson..

my guess is it's simply another group of disenfranchised voters. some like to refer to them as angry and stupid. i think disenfranchised is more appropriate. their eager to vote against the status-quo politicians.
i was studying the democratic candidates yesterday, all of the viable ones are thoroughly entrenched (not just career, but entrenched) politicians with 25-35 years in politics.
i wonder 1) why isn't there an unentrenched viable democrat candidate and 2) would that person be better received than a republican unentrenched candidate like Trump or Carson.
