I have just made a setup for Performance Monitoring on a Scandinavian Hosting Provider, where I am polling +9000 servers for QOS data every 5 minutes, calculating SLA's and capacity trends. The MySQL database is running on a Hyper-V REHL guest, with 8 cores and 64GB ram, and it only pushes around 1500/2000 IOPS when its working hard.
So I doubt you are hitting the roof because of MySQL. The problem is most likely poor datamodels, poor code, or a underdimensioned DB server.
You might consider some sort of Application Delivery Controller (Citrix Netscaler or F5 is a good place to start.. but stay away from Cisco ACE).
Moving to a different CMS because of the Database server behind it looks like a decision based on feelings rather than facts.
