Stay and fight (with what? for what?) or take your wife and kid(s) on a thousands of kms trek risking drowning, starvation, or at the very least winding up in an internment camp.
Tough choice either way.
Remember, Syria has been getting shredded by this war for years now. It's probably very likely that many and more of these people stayed as long as they could, possibly even fought some with what they had, and now see no other option than to get the hell out of there. Also, a lof of these refugees aren't even from Syria. Several of them have been spoken to directly by news media who were from all over, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.
The trek they're all on certainly looks like it would be no picnic. Thus I don't think I would fling the word 'coward' their way.
