Especially as a Serb, I'd be more careful in taking the high pulpit to preach about decency in the conduct of war. Some of us do remember what Serb forces did to helpless civilian populations under their control not so long ago. And we remember the adulation and praise that the Serbian people extended to your war criminals. They were wildly popular in the Serbian State as they inflicted terror arising from ancient ethnic conflicts on civilian populations. The pointless destruction of cultural treasures. Torture and willful sadism as policy. Genocidal murder and rape as instruments of political and ethic policy. Outright, wholesale theft of private property as an instrument of state policy. Little girls as prizes of war. Forced impregnation of Bosnian and Croat and Montenegran women to bear little Serbs and to extinguish the other cultures. Ethnic cleansing. The entire civilized world was aghast, organized a military force to clean the stable you created, and the feces you befouled the Balkans with. I've spoken to Serbs in Germany and they explained to me how the once-popular Serbian restaurants there largely went out of business because the German were so shocked that they wanted nothing at all to do with anything Serbian. I have known and respected Serb friends my entire life, I've enjoyed fine meals at Serb Hall in Milwaukee, and I go to festivals at Serbian Orthodox churches from time to time. I've known World War II veterans of the Serbian King's forces and I've heard their side of it. And I know all about the history of the Ustace and the other facts preceding your reign of terror, and in the opinion of the Serbian state, justifying revenge. But your nation - the Serbian state in which you live - and its community, including yourself - is simply in no position to preach to Americans about the moral conduct of just wars. As your follow-up, perhaps you could address the devotion of the Serbian people, history, and culture - to the ideals of democracy. To principles of personal freedom, including free speech the toleration of minorities, and cultural diversity. Once you establish that, perhaps, you'd earn a place at the table talking with Americans about ethical conduct in war.
