In reality, we have to keep Assad around in the near term or risk the vacuum that we created in Iraq. A government framework is necessary until ISIS is defeated or pushed out of Syria. At that point, we will see Russia help transition Assad out of power since they do not want to be tied up there for decades and decades. We actually know this, but will not admit it for political reasons.
