It's just a difference in terminology. 'Assault riffles' weren't an issue here as they were never readily available. By sport shooters, I'm not referring to a type of gun but to the activity like target shooting, competition etc.
The activities are still perfectly legal. The laws were about tougher licensing and gun storage regulations, the ban was on self-loading rifles and hand-guns how ever you want to refer to them.
