how much do you think the ukrainians have upgraded their military in the past 30 years? of course it's a soviet built missile.
there is a great deal of information that is obscured in this matter.
the reality of the situation is a commerical flight was approved over a warzone that had been enduring aerial bombardment for weeks beforehand.
that very warzone had operational military equipment that could target the very civilian plane the government
insisted be flown at 33k feet, rather than the 35k feet that was requested.
