Ah, yet another tabloid story on Hefner...growing old is no picnic...
But you can't take away the fact that he was a GREAT magazine editor-publisher, and gave a well-paid home to many of the finest writing, art, design, cartoon, photography and modeling talents of his prime era...
I grew up reading the magazine in its 60s heyday and its fantastic fiction and interviews inspired me with the power of words and the idea of being a writer.
Of course, I read the articles AFTER I closely perused and appreciated the pix!
But read the articles, I did. I still remember a heated discussion I had with my friends about capital punishment, after reading an article about the topic in a 1966 issue. (I think Playmate of the Year Alison Parks was on the cover.)
Today at flea markets those old 50s and 60s mags sell briskly as the beautifully crafted time capsules they are, and according to the dealers I've spoken with, many of the purchasers are women. Of course I grabbed a few issues myself from the years when I was still too young to read 'em!
