Some departments city and county require an associates or a certain amount of credits. To be a supervisor, they make it a 4 year. The standards may seem low because they have a quota of minorities to hire and can't because some don't have college and just have a high school diploma. The academy just gets you certified in the state to be a cop. Then you have training for months where they wash you out if you don't hack it. And they send you to training throughout your career to help you with your job. A lot of agencies have a culture, it all depends where.
My dad was a cop in the Bronx in the 80s. Worst of the worst of humanity. They out you there to wash you out and if you survived you went to a different pricinct.
