You can have the same colors when compressing a PNG. If you use high compression, GIMP for example, you get a smaller file that takes longer to create. If you use low compression, you get a bigger file that's quicker to create. You'll get the same PNG in the end, though.
BUT saving as 8/16/32bit makes a difference with the colors used.
