No shortage of yellow rivers and smog in the USA.
I remember staying once at the Westin Bonaventure in LA. Had a nice suite with a panoramic view of the Hollywood Hills and the Hollywood Sign. Except after about 10am it was completely hazed out and not visible.
Every big city in the world has smog, it's a fact of life in any fossil fuel burning transport environment.
Every country in the world has pollution problems, some worse than others.
China is getting better, pumping huge amounts of money into renewables - it will take time.
As for China as a destination for expats, Shanghai is a cosmopolitan bustling city with enormous opportunity.
