I agree - its terrible. I've been watching it every night from the beginning but last week I started fast-forwarding past the monologue and credits to get to the political / pop culture bit that he had on his old show under his character of "Stephen Colbert", which is the only part of the new show that is funny.
Here's what I hate:
- The band leader is annoying, fake, ugly, pointless, boring. He looks like he was chosen by a focus group made up of 95 year old white people. The flute / synth thing he is blowing into sounds terrible and looks stupid.
- The fake "good time". The endless pointless stupid banter between Colber and the band leader, and especially the stupid dancing. Is this Late Night or is it the Ellen show? Colbert looks almost desperate when he does this.
- The whole show seems very carefully produced, defined, refined, calculated, and tweaked. There is no spark, no surprises. Not even the political humour has an edge.
On the other hand, Trevor Noah is fantastic replacement for Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. He's funny as hell, the jokes have bite, the timing seems casual yet still perfect. Even The Nightly Show is really good, as is "This Week Tonight" with John Oliver. Also very funny.
Sorry, Stephen!
