I have a high end 4 bedroom condo in Delhi with amazing facilities, 24 hour security, private restaurants, clubs, private hospital, swimming pool, gym, sauna, spa, bank, function rooms and all the works and will rent at around 40,000 rupees a month and it would be better than anything in the western world in terms of bang for buck. Price is lower if you find something not close to a metro station.

If you're just renting a room in Delhi and live quite modestly you could live comfortably on less than 20,000 rupees a month in a high end place where other expats live. There are loads of foreigners there but you have to remember that once you leave your luxury "zone" you're in a dusty, hot environment which has awful infrastructure. It's also very polluted because its developing more quickly than China right now.

To give an idea a simple meal in a local café costs less than 150 rupees ($1.50) and you can hire a taxi for a full day (8 hours) inside less than 1000 rupees (approx. $15 USD). So India is cheap but there are far better places in Asia for a western person to live cheaply in my view such as South East Asia.
