I have always maintained a simple attitude towards this. If you don't want other people referring to you using a certain word, don't use that word to refer to yourself or others.
I don't buy the bullshit of, "we took it back" or "It's a term of endearment." You can't ask for equality while simultaneously demanding special treatment and that is what using the N word is.
