Read it again. He said, "boy was I reluctant to have to do that" because he was not reluctant to drive 50mph. That's called sarcasm. And just because he was not reluctant to drive 50mph does not necessarily communicate that he was intent on making it top his destination in the shortest amount of time. That what you introduced.
