Why did he stick around? If you willing to walk into a room and shoot three dozen innocent people for some minor slight, you aren't too smart to begin with or have a mental issue. He didn't have a long term plan here.

The "mixed motive" theory is gaining traction from news reports I have been watching. The fact that he was well supplied with arms, bombs, and tactical gear suggests planning. But the fact he was still driving around in the same car that he should have known was witnessed prior, suggests spur-of-the-moment shooting. The fact that the couple did not kill everyone in the banquet room, or blow themselves up, also suggests spur-of-the-moment or disgruntled worker killing.
So perhaps this guy was planning some sort of other terrorist attack. But something at his workplace set him off, so he carried out a spur-of-the-moment work place attack.
