Seeing the picture above, I have a new theory.
She radicalized him. Look at her, she's petite, cute, pretty. He's a dorky nerd that had to advertise for a wife for years.
He goes to Saudi Arabia, meets this hot, religious, devoted chick. He brings her back, she's everything he hoped for. She eggs him on, and in her eyes, only a martyr is good enough. She probably had the contacts, and they actually are a kind of bonny and clyde, but an islamic radical version.
