All of you need to keep in mind that as this was unfolding, it looked like a "violence in the workplace" kind of incident. As we learn more, it's becoming apparent this was some kind of terrorist related incident. However it's still strange being as terrorist attacks usually don't take place against someone's work place, but instead against a highly visible target where they can inflict large amounts of casualties - airports, convention centers, embassies, and similar targets.
Here is what I think happen... I think this man was mentally unstable to some degree, and his wife surely had a large amount of influence over him. His wife was most likely radicalized in the Middle East, and to a large extent so was he. I think they were planning some kind of a larger attack, but something at this party set him off - perhaps it was just the fact that he had to take part in a Christmas gathering. The had a target in mind, but quickly changed over to the party and were most likely on their way to the primary or original target when police caught up to them.
