I understand the advice but life just doesn't work that way. Because somebody else has it worse than one person doesn't make his struggles any less to him.
I've known people with terminal illnesses and guys who've been dumped and the terminally ill usually deal with their predicament better than dumped men. Women rebound way faster from relationships. I bet this guy would handle a serious illness better than he is this.
