Quebec and especially Montreal are huge tourist destinations. The culture here is very proudly french Quebecois and it's totally cool. I also understand that they want to preserve the language and culture. Unfortunately the tactics that are used are baffling. Instead of encouraging French, they discourage English or other languages.
If I were a tourist coming to Montreal, I would love to see tiny little English translations under big giant French signs. This would tell me what the words mean, and teach me something at the same time. Furthermore I'd feel very welcome in this strange land.
Quebec should be really jumping through hoops right now to get tourists to come because the American dollar is so strong, Every tourist business imaginable can offer huge discounts to American tourists and still make a killer profit. But no. nope. nada.
And to be fair, it's not the people that want this. It's just the law, and Bill 101.
