It is sad. Montreal used to be at least 50% english and west Quebec was mostly english. But the language battles over the last 45 years have driven many of the english speakers out. My mother was born in a little village in west Quebec that was mostly Irish and English farmers. You go there now and many of the english names are being changed to french ones. They are completely wiping out the heritage of all of the historically non-french areas of the province. Basically all that is left are all of the english, irish and scottish names on the old tombstones in the cemeteries and some towns that have managed to retain their english names for now.
And all for what? To save the french language from the cultural onslaught of a Shakespeare play? That's like an english town banning a french opera.
What a joke.
