The fact is originality just doesn't sell that well, certainly not in Hollywood, most people are loath to fuck with a winning formula. The second trilogy got away from the formula and it sucked. Blockbusters are pretty much always rehashes, reboots, remakes, sequels or something else that is prefab template driven and highly formulaic, there may be some exceptions but they don't start with the Disney logo.

The prequels were not very good overall (I did really like Episode III) due to some poor casting/acting and some questionable character choices as Lucas played down to the young crowd a bit too much for my taste. That being said, I did not hate them as much as many people did and frankly, as the OP mentioned, at least he created new storylines and allowed us to explore the world of Star Wars in new ways with new planets, characters etc.
Yes I enjoyed the new one last night, because I'm a sucker for Star Wars in general, but it was a major letdown at the same time for the reasons stated above.
