I don't care much for the similarities of plot, that's even ok, but, unfortunately they missed to copy the bad guys. The good guys are ok, they are super smart, even too much.
The bad guys in this movie are plain funny losers who have no clue what's going on, including the supreme leader zoomed super size... they scare no one, they are super trainer and equipped but when shoot they never hit anything (except when destroying whole planet), while good guy hit the bad guys in head perfectly on each try even if they are new to war (helmets are not useful as they die immediately always).
The wannabe-darth vader kid nephew it could be weak by script design, ok.. unsecure teen with strong name he can't uphold ok ok... but his leader is a silly cgi (don't tell me he resembles original art concept of 1977 for palpatine emperor - they used other concept finally for a reason!)... this top bad guy appearing in hologram knows nothing, say nothing, just he gets report of continued failure, without even get angry, and seems to have no any strategy whatsoever. He appears, hears all is going bad, and let these idiots continue do what they wish. When all of his army and planet is destroyed, he asks the failed general: "bring me the kid darth vader so he finishes is training", I wonder, he been trained to be a loser, what's the final phase, to be killed by a giant pizza the hut creature as in spaceballs?
