As I mentioned above, firearms are legal in many European countries. However people there use them very responsible. Even in Russia, where you think firearms are forbidden, anybody can legally buy a shotgun or a semi-automatic 7.62 mm version of AK-47. For example, a citizen of Switzerland can legally buy even a machine gun or a bazooka. But when I say "can" it doesn't mean "must". Most of people in Europe just don't feel any need to buy the firearms. Take into account that almost every man in my country is an army veteran and I'm not an exception (military service is a mandatory thing here).
Now about hammers and knives. Those are #1 as a weapon of domestic murder. You are 100% correct on that. However, they can not be used for massacres, like all those mass school shooting news from the USA.
