I had an epiphany when I was fifteen years old. I lived in rural New Jersey, on top of a mountain, and every time it snowed we got snowed in. The roads would be blocked for days, our driveway was long and full of snow; We had to shovel the huge back porch because if not it would freeze the pipes. Our power would go off, and we would spend days on end alternating between shoveling snow and sleeping in sleeping bags in front of the fireplace. One day I spent an afternoon shoveling snow and came in for lunch. That's when I had my epiphany - I was fifteen years old and would spend my entire day shoveling snow and my great big fucking reward was grilled cheese sandwich. Fuck that.
I vowed right there and then I would move to some place where it never snows.
That's exactly what I did. I moved to South Carolina and then North Carolina, and eventually out to California and Arizona. I've seen snow twice in the past twenty years, once when we drove up to see it and once when I had to return home to New Jersey for a funeral.
If you live for snow, ski and snowboard, and a snow mobile in your garage... Then that's great for you. I loved snow when I was a kid - I used to love to ski - but when you get older snow just sucks.
