As far as Gay Rights, Reagan did a lot for gays, he spoke out against the Briggs initiative and with the democrats signed budgets for aids research that grew in size with each years budget during his presidency.
If you look at history, the republican party has done a lot for social issues, it's where the party has headed since Reagan that concerns me. The democrat party says it's out for every one, but get nothing done because of bad leadership or just promise more than they can ever deliver. ( case in point, shovel ready jobs )
In steps Trump, he's not really either a republican or a democrat and is changing the way politics is done, he does it his way and doesn't let the special interest groups tell him what to do, he doesn't let ethnic groups tell him what to do, he doesn't give a fuck about Political Correctness which is something I love about him.
Both political parties are afraid of him right now, because he would fundamentally change the way the government is ran and given the low polls for congress and the lowest overall average approval rating for a president since President Carter, the people are about change.!

Thanks. Although I will disagree with you about Trump being a politician. He is very much so at this point. A different one for sure, but still one.
