Then Americans invaded Afghanistan 20 years later and in 15 years we haven't accomplished jack-shit either. I'll be the last one to defend the US policy failures in Iraq. Both Russian and US led coalition missions in Iraq and Syria are failures also. Defending the indefensible is nationalist idiocy.
We only fight for our (Russian or US) national interests in the Middle East and the Arabs and Persians fight for their interests in the same places. There will always be war there history of 5,000+ years proves that.
