Two back-to-back world wars that wiped out nearly half of Europe's population transformed Europe's survivors (or most of them) into idealistic pacifists.
Pushed hard enough, Europeans will undoubtedly revert back to their historical form.
And historically speaking, frogmarching a million or so unassimilated people out a country isn't exactly an unprecedented event there or anywhere else.
