State was going after him for double homicide. To find him guilty the jury needed have "beyond a reasonable doubt" The prosecution totally fucked that case. It was theirs for the taking.
The Brown family sued him in Civil court for monetary damages. You do not have the burden of proof in Civil court that you do in State or Federal.
I did find it funny they released this series at the start of Black History Month. So far it is pretty good.
