I'd say those odds were very good. A man with the same foot size, same rare shoe, made tracks in blood at the scene? Toss in ALL the other evidence, my God.
If this was a regular man, they would've thrown away the key. His demeanor during the interviews was also highly suspect. Changing his story and laughing out of pure stress and nervousness.
