If you're new to SEO, I would focus on marketing your site instead of generating search traffic. Its a very steep learning curb and can take awhile before you see results IF any.
On the other hand, if you market your site and try to generate referral traffic, word-of-mouth or social traffic, you will be diversifying your traffic sources AND doing SEO at the same time (since SEO is all about link building and becoming an authorative site).
Once you have a basic marketing plan set in motion, gradually make changes to your site to tweak your seo settings to see if you're doing something right.
Also, read as much as you can about SEO. Don't stop reading. There is a lot to learn
