Everyone is a fucking HERO these days!
The word "HERO" gets thrown around more than a drunken white girl at a Omega Psi Phi frat party. Everyone is a fucking hero these days. That word has lost all meaning to me at this point.
A guy whose regular job is working 12 hours a day making $10 an hour as a mechanic's assistant, on his way home hears the screams of children coming from a house completely engulfed in flames. He runs in and rescues three children - never taking consideration for his own life or safety. That's the true definition of being heroic, therefore he is a HERO. A firefighter who trains for situations like this, getting paid $70k a year, shows up and puts out the fire with a bunch of high tech equipment? Nope, that's not heroic. That's doing his damn job.
That cop that was mortally wounded in Fargo, they're calling him a hero. For what? What exactly did he do that was so heroic? Put on a uniform? Wore a badge? Carried a gun? Arrested bad people? He was doing his fucking job, what he was getting paid to do. A career choice is not heroic. Actions are heroic, jobs are not.
Everyone in the military is NOT a hero. A portion larger than most of us want to believe, are actually uneducated cowards. Just because a person puts on a military uniform doesn't automatically brand them a HERO. They passed their ASVAB, got through basic training, and tech school. No where in my universe does that automatically make someone a hero. Once again, it's a person's actions that are heroic, not positions or the uniforms they wear.
We have lost our way and simply labeling entire groups as heroes based on the action of a few. It's disgusting, and borderline idolatry. Not to be confused with idiocy, which we all surpassed years ago.
